Welcome to my Professional Blog
What's up?! My name is Dylan and I guess you're reading my blog. As I'm writing this, I am currently on my fifth year of college and my third year at UW Milwaukee. I am currently student teaching English 10 at The Barack Obama School of Career and Technical Education and it already is playing a major role at how I view English Education. This is a school where a large amount of the student population don't care about learning or have simply been "swept up" by life. These students have had to deal with hardships that I can barely understand, but looking past these hardships I see students with a fire to survive and thrive in whatever way they deem necessary. My goal, as an educator is to provide these students with the tools they need to survive and thrive after high school. I would also love to spark an interest in reading for the kids too. Helping students learn applicable skills, like writing emails, leaving voicemails, and even creating a resume can help them to have a step up when they leave high school. Most importantly, I want to be a positive role model for these kids.
I'm the mustache guy BTW
Dylan, I respect and admire your outlook on the purpose of English education. Sparking interest to red? Love that! Focusing on skills to survive and thrive? Absolutely! Real world skills? That's what many find relevant and applicable.
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to learning more about your inquiry topic and what your goals are with text. This semester is going to be a trip!
Not sure why that showed up as "Unknown"... wow I feel old! This is Rayen.
DeleteHi! I was thinking the same, but found out that if you click on the profile picture next to "unknown", you should be able to create a profile with your name and picture. This is what worked for me.
DeleteThanks, Kali, for sharing that helpful bit of information. I did not know about this feature. I created my profile long ago before "Unknown" was allowed. Thanks, again!
DeleteI think that it is really important that you recognize that there are many hardships that students face that some of us cannot understand. This is something that I think about a lot as I enter my student teaching as a UWM student because I grew up in a fairly affluent area, and I never experienced any true hardship before.
ReplyDeleteIt is difficult to connect with students when you do not have a real sense of understanding of what they are going through on a day to day basis outside of the classroom. I would welcome any input on how you are finding ways to connect with students in this situation!
I love your goal as an educator to help the student population you work with! I actually live 5 minutes away from The Barack Obama School of Career and Technical Education! Yes, each and every one of them has that fire within them. They need the guiding hand to be motivated and inspired! Many of them have dreams they want to achieve and talents that haven't been explored deeper due to the hardships and barriers in their way. On top of helping them learn skills such as writing emails, resumes, and leaving voicemails, maybe some of them would like to write/illustrate stories, blog, etc. I look forward to seeing your journey!
ReplyDeleteHi Dylan, it is great to have you in class again. I look forward to exploring learning with a bit more, now through the lens of reading.
